The European Commission’s definition:
"Le terme volontariat fait en général référence à tout travail effectué de sa propre initiative et non par obligation, ce qui laisse supposer qu'un volontaire est une personne qui choisit délibérément de réaliser une certaine activité pour en retirer une satisfaction personnelle et obéir à certaines valeurs humanistes, et non pas pour bénéficier d'une quelconque rémunération."

The European Council’s definition:
"Le volontariat est un geste d’apprentissage, de partage et de solidarité ; le volontariat permet aux jeunes et aux moins jeunes d’acquérir une expérience de la vie, un esprit civique et des compétences professionnelles. Il participe de la transmission du savoir. Il améliore l’employabilité des personnes volontaires au chômage et permet aux personnes âgées de rester actives."

Therefore, voluntary service is:
- unpaid work on a project that benefits the community
- living and working with an international and multi-skilled group of people
- integration in a local context, discovering the hidden facets of a country and its culture
- meeting young people from different backgrounds (geographical, professional, etc.)
- getting involved in a process of exchange and complementarity.

Our two associations, the GEC and the APARE, propose three different types of voluntary service (both short- and long-term), in areas related to heritage preservation, sustainable development and the environment, in France and abroad.
